The history of wine in Virginia began in 1619
with the 12th Act of the joint House of Burgesses.
The House decreed that
every householder annually plant and maintain ten vines.

The 1980 Virginia Farm Winery Act paved the way for wineries to offer tours
and tastings at the winery. There were only six wineries at that
